Modal split is commonly defined as the percentage of travellers using a particular type (mode) of transportation, for example private vehicles, trams, busses, or bikes. Mobility has a significant impact on the energy consumption of an urban area; by reducing traffic demand, promoting slow modes (walking and cycling) and using more collective forms of transport the energy consumption can be reduced. The table below lists renewal solutions that are taken into account in the Mobility module. Two types of modal split are the output (KPI) of the module, the modal split for origin and destination. The origin modal split is applicable to the traffic that departs from the case study area and the destination modal split is applicable to the traffic that goes to the case study area. Table 1. The approach for determining the modal split in the module consists of five stages:

Determine the baseline modal split: The modal split of the existing situation is achieved via traffic counts at traffic routes that enter and leave the area. An example of the locations for traffic counts can be seen in Figure 1; the red lines indicate where the traffic counts have been done for the Ecodistr-ICT case study of Warsaw. The most suitable places to do counts are there where traffic enters and leaves the case study area. In the report on traffic counts and modal split for the Warsaw case study an overview of the type of counts that should be undertaken as well as time of day when counts were made can be found (link >> ). There are different (commercial) tools that can be used to calculate the modal split from traffic counts, e.g. PTV Visum (see references). The output of PTV Visum, or other tool, needs to be inserted into the IDSS by hand, as no such tool is connected to the IDSS platform at the moment.

Select possible renewal solutions: Out of the list of renewal solutions listed in Table 1, the solutions that are applicable for the case in question are to be selected.

Determine the impact of the renewal solutions: At this step a mobility expert should be consulted who will (1) estimate (based on references and experience) what the impact of the renewal solutions will be, and (2) the expert will define alternatives for the case. Each renewal solution will have an impact on the modal split, the combination of several renewal solutions could have a higher impact.

Data template: The data template is to be used to fill in the data of the steps mentioned above.

Calculation of modal split for renewal solutions: The Mobility module calculates the modal split for the selected renewal solutions (defined in each alternative). If the outcomes of the alternatives (KPI’s) are compared to the existing situation, in the ideal case, public transport and slow modes have a higher percentage and private transport has a lower percentage.

[caption id="attachment_2311" align="aligncenter" width="837"] Figure 1: Analysed area with traffic counts for private transport – showing a district in Warsaw (Open street map, 2015)[/caption] Interdependence to other modules The module does not need any output data from other calculation modules in the IDSS. References and more information

PTV Visum, is a software tool for traffic analyses, forecasts and GIS-based data management. It can model road users and their interactions and has become a recognized standard in the field of transport planning. Transportation experts use PTV Visum to model transport networks and travel demand, to analyse expected traffic flows, to plan public transport services and to develop advanced transport strategies and solutions.
